A lottery will be held next month for 48 mixed-income housing units at The Hayes at Railroad Square in Haverhill.
Formerly the site of the Hayes Building Mill Complex, The Hayes at Railroad Square has one- and two-bedroom apartments
ranging from 700 square feet to 1,500 square feet.
Rent for the affordable apartments will be between $750 and $1,075 per month for the one-bedroom apartments and $930 to
$1,275 for the two-bedroom apartments. The affordable apartments are for people and families who make 50 to 80 percent of the
median income for the Greater Haverhill area. The market rate rents are the same as affordable apartments, approximately $1,075
for a one-bedroom and $1,275 for a two-bedroom, with heat and hot water included.
Constructed in 1894 by Charles H. Hayes, the Hayes Building Mill Complex was originally a box factory, serving many local
businesses including the booming shoe industry. After the building burned in 1911, Hayes rebuilt an even larger structure next
door. Over the past century, the Hayes Block has housed various local businesses, including the Haverhill Electric Company.
"We are proud to be part of a project that has brought over 150 jobs and a new kind of housing to the area," said Lisa Alberghini,
president of the Planning Office for Urban Affairs, the developer of The Hayes at Railroad Square. "The continued support of Mayor
(James) Fiorentini, City Council members, the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce and the local community, has helped to
make the redevelopment of the Hayes at Railroad Square a success."
An information session on the lottery process will take place Wednesday at 6 p.m. at All Saints Parish Hall at 120 Bellevue Ave. in
Haverhill. The lottery will also take place at All Saints Parish Hall on May 25. Applications need to be received no later than noon on
May 19.
